Referrals, cookies and website analytics
We run a referral program. If you arrive through a referral link, a referral code, or a QR code from an event we supplied, we record that so the person who referred you gets credit for it. Here is exactly what that involves.
- A first-party cookie. When you follow a referral link we set a cookie on our own site recording which referral it was. It is read only by us, it is not shared with advertisers, and it expires by itself.
- A random visitor ID. So we can tell roughly how many people followed a referral link and how many went on to book, we store a random identifier. It is generated by us at random. It is not derived from your device, your browser fingerprint, or anything about you.
- Referral links and codes. Customers have their own referral link and code, and events we supply may have a QR code. These identify the referrer — not you.
What we do not do. We do not fingerprint your device, and we do not build a marketing profile from your IP address. Referral attribution does not need either of those, so we do not collect them for it.
Your own referral activity — how many people you referred and what credit you have earned — is visible to you in your customer portal. It does not show you the names or contact details of anyone else.
How the credit itself works is set out in the Burns Credit & Referral Program Terms.
